Portsmouth “C” – Seeing is Believing

Portsmouth  “C”

That which takes us by surprise-moments of happiness-that is inspiration. — Agnes Martin

Welcome to Portsmouth “C’ – the charming Craftsman that is so much more than what meets the eye. Yes, this cutie has a covered front porch for watching the world go by, while enjoying a cup of coffee, a structure of natural materials and colors, a two-car garage, large windows for lots of light, but it is so much more.  Yes, Frank Snodgrass and Living Concepts bring you a 4,040 sq. foot home with 4 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, but the real form and function is what you don’t initially see.

Let’s go look…..

Entryway & Dining Room

I am a fan of how deceptive this home is – it adds to the charm and delight. From the entry, you don’t yet know what lies beyond and where the surprises hide, but we’ll get to them.

The long wall on the left of the foyer is ideal for cool artwork or a contemporary table and mirror.  This is your home to make yours…..create what makes you happy.

The dining room opens to the foyer on the right. A wide frame opening to a hallway that runs the width of the house, from the main bedroom to the laundry room. Now, the dining room can be formal or casual…as long as you laugh and make great memories here, the décor is up to you.

Main Bedroom

The left side of the house is the main bedroom.  This is a delightful treat – but not a surprise.  The bedroom area is quite large, and a nice, soft, king-sized bed, paired with walls in a calm color and texture, would be lovely. The bath has two walk-in closets, two single-vanity sinks, a linen closet, a corner shower, and a deep-soaking tub. You’ll appreciate the separate room for the commode.

Family Room, Eating area & Kitchen

The family room, in the center of the house, is large and open. The fireplace can be contemporary, but as is typical of the Craftsman style, it might be a wood-framed, brick hearth beauty.  A cozy, large sectional, a few sofa tables around the room, a corner sitting area, add a bar cart, and you’ve begun to create an area that will be the entertainment center, all the time.  A door in this space leads to your covered outdoor terrace.

The eating area of the kitchen is where you need a long kitchen table for kids to do homework, put out appetizers and a dessert spread when you dine and entertain in the dining room, the place where you have coffee and pastry with your favorite people, or wacky family game nights.

Your kitchen is waiting for a party.  Its island is ideal for prepping or serving food, the bar area by the sink is for asking friends to do something helpful while they drink wine, and the counter space is where the dozens of cookies you make for holidays will cool.  This is a great kitchen.

There is a door from the eating area out to a large, screened porch – more entertaining space!

Laundry, Pantry, ‘Back Room’, and Surprise

Across the kitchen is a stairway down to a lower level.  Surprise!  An exposed lower level. There is a handy storage pantry, a closet, a powder room, and a laundry room with a utility sink too.

Another closet is in the large, open area, before you head out to your garage.   In this ‘open’ area is another surprise – stairs that go up to a second floor of the attached garage!  Say garage band!  Say office – hobby space – cozy, get-a-way from people space.

Lower Level

I told you this home, from the outside, did not fully represent itself.  This lower level is a gem. From ideas of a Man cave – kid haven – “momland”…. to a family room, it’s everything you want it to be.  A centrally located room featuring a fireplace is flanked by two guest suites and a bathroom with a double-sink vanity. Additionally, for wine enthusiasts, a designated space is available for storing collections. If this is a ‘tech’ house, then you will appreciate the mechanical storage room for necessary house ‘stuff’ and your servers/generators etc.  A curved bar and a wide area, open for gaming tables, video games, or dining, greet you when you walk down the stairs.

On the right side of the space, there is another suite, a bathroom, and outside, a lower covered lanai, which is perfect for a private hot tub.

SURPRISE – Above the Garage

Above the garage is a bonus room and bathroom.  See?  This place is not as it seems – it is so much more.  Sure, this can be a total man-space.  Or, ladies, if this is your home, an art studio, library, or a yoga/pilates studio could work up here.

Maybe you have a college-aged or older child who lives at home, temporarily, and needs ‘space’, well, fix this up for him or her.
